The 2024 Sprint calendar included venues in Shanghai, Miami, Spielberg, Austin, Sao Paulo, and Qatar. However, in 2025, Spa-Francorchamps will replace Spielberg, offering a new venue for Sprint racing that promises to deliver great racing on the iconic Belgian circuit.
Since its inception, the Sprint format has significantly boosted viewership and provided fans with more engaging race weekends. For example, the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix saw an 83% increase in broadcast audience for qualifying sessions compared to the previous year [1] [2]
Formula 1's commitment to evolving and enhancing the fan experience is evident in these continued adaptations and improvements to the Sprint format. As the sport celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, fans can look forward to another year of exciting short-format racing that complements the traditional Grand Prix weekends.
My Take
I know many people dislike the Sprint weekends, but many of the races this year have been absolute bangers. I would much rather watch a Sprint race on Saturday than a free practice session. The Sprint format tends to shake up the grid and the weekend because teams only have one 60-minute practice session to dial in their setups for the Sprint race. This adds an element of unpredictability and excitement that FP3 can't deliver, IMO.
