Red Bull Unveils the RB17 Hypercar at Goodwood Festival of Speed
Red Bull has taken the automotive world by storm with the unveiling of their highly anticipated hypercar, the RB17, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Designed by the aerodynamics mastermind Adrian Newey, the RB17 is a track-only beast that promises unparalleled performance and innovation.
The RB17 is powered by a Red Bull-spec, Cosworth-made 1,000bhp 4.5-litre V10 engine capable of revving up to 15,000rpm, supplemented by a 200bhp e-motor. This potent combination ensures that the RB17 delivers a staggering amount of power, making it a true monster on the track. The car’s target weight is below 900kg, ensuring an exceptional power-to-weight ratio to thrill even the most demanding drivers.
The RB17’s design is a testament to Adrian Newey’s genius. It features side pods and a shape that is defined more by what’s missing than by what’s actually there. Its two-seat carbon fiber monocoque chassis houses a semi-stressed mid-mounted V10 engine and a carbon fiber gearbox that drives the rear wheels. Boasting a top speed of over 350 kph, the RB17 is more than five meters long and two meters wide, making it a significant presence on any track.
Only 50 RB17s will be produced, marking it as an exclusive collector’s item. The hypercar made its static world debut at Goodwood after undergoing a successful and rigorous prototype testing program.
Adrian Newey, who will leave Red Bull Racing in early 2025, has devoted his efforts to bringing the RB17 to fruition. Newey expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “I had been mulling around the idea to take on the challenge to design our very own hypercar, from concept to delivery, for many years and it has been a magnificent project and journey. For it to finally be the day we pull the covers off and see the birth of the RB17 is truly remarkable. The RB17 Hypercar embraces everything we stand for: undeniable power, speed, and beauty.”
Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, also shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to reveal the RB17 at Goodwood Festival of Speed, a project that is one of the most authentic and exciting that Red Bull Advanced Technologies has embarked upon to date. With 20 years of legacy in the world of F1 to draw from, and as a performance-centred organisation, it only made sense for us to design our own hypercar from the ground up. Combining technical innovation, achievement and emotional appeal, the RB17 is a landmark car. I’m very proud of the team and am delighted to see it make its world debut. We expect the RB17 to be a future classic.”
The RB17 stands as a testament to Red Bull’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering and performance. With its groundbreaking design and awe-inspiring specifications, the RB17 is set to become a future classic, representing the pinnacle of hypercar innovation and performance.
