SRR Series: The Iron Bowl - Alabama vs. Auburn
Historical Significance of the Rivalry
Each year, the Iron Bowl brings the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers together in one of college football’s most legendary rivalries. The rivalry began on February 22, 1893, when Auburn defeated Alabama 32-22 at Lakeview Park in Birmingham. Over the years, the game has evolved from a simple contest into a cultural phenomenon deeply ingrained in Alabama's identity.
Historically, the game was played at Legion Field in Birmingham until 1998, when it transitioned to home-and-home venues, alternating between Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium and Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium. The name "Iron Bowl" was coined by Auburn coach Ralph "Shug" Jordan in 1964, reflecting Birmingham's historical significance as a center for iron and steel production.
